Info on wheelchairs with leakproof and non-spillproof batteries
LEAKFREE (Non-Spillable): e.g. Gel-cell, AGM, SLA, Sealed-Lead-Acid, Dry-cell.
- Attachment: Battery must be securely attached and poles protected against short circuits. Enclosed batteries often do not require disconnection; exposed poles should use electrical insulating tape.
- Insulation: Electrical circuits should be insulated to prevent accidental activation. This can be done with a key, disconnecting cables or a special plug.
- Removable batteries: in wheelchairs where the battery can be removed by the user (e.g. folding wheelchairs), the battery must be removed, it must be protected by the customer against short circuits and transported in sturdy, hard packaging in the luggage compartment.
NON-LEAKFREE/NAT (Spillable): e.g. designations: Lead-Acid, Wet-cell battery.
Wheelchairs with a wet-cell battery are no longer allowed on our flights.
